In Montgomery County, three notable organizations were recently distinguished with the 2025 Austin Heyman Community for a Lifetime Award, as per an announcement by the Montgomery County Commission on Aging. The honor, named after fervent advocate Austin Heyman, is bestowed on entities that exemplify commitment to making the county favorable for residents across the age spectrum, ensuring that older adults can live with independence and respect. Among the lauded are Montgomery Connects, Holiday Park Seniors, Inc., and Maryland Senior Olympics.
A statement attributed to Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, published on the county’s official website, emphasized that the county’s designation as an AARP Age-Friendly community is the result of deliberate effort rather than chance. "This achievement is not accidental. It results from our dedicated investment in programs and organizations committed to this cause," Elrich said, commending Montgomery Connects, Holiday Park Seniors, and Maryland Senior Olympics for their substantial support of older adults. Distributed by the County’s Department of Technology and Enterprise Business Solutions, Montgomery Connects endeavors to eradicate the digital divide through access to broadband, distribution of technology, and digital literacy training for the county's most vulnerable residents.
Holiday Park Seniors, Inc. was recognized for fostering the welfare of adults 55 and older within the Wheaton and Silver Spring areas. The nonprofit extends the reach of the Holiday Park Senior Center, incorporating educational initiatives, a community garden, and an emergency medical device lending service to aid seniors in staying engaged and connected.
Meanwhile, Maryland Senior Olympics stands out for its commitment to health, wellness, and civic participation among the 50-and-over crowd. With a belief that 'To participate is to win,' the organization reduces entry barriers, empowers ongoing physical activity, and hits home the importance of staying socially connected.
