Two leaders of the infamous MS-13 gang have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms, as disclosed in a recent announcement by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of North Carolina. The convictions mark a significant victory for law enforcement in their ongoing battle against one of the nation's most violent criminal organizations.
Fredy Mauricio Buruca, also known by aliases "Piranha," "Machete," and "Insoportable," was handed a 30-year sentence, with an additional three years of supervised release following his incarceration. Moreover, Buruca faces a lifetime registration as a sex offender. Co-defendant Santos Guillermo Ramirez Mancia, known as "Azazel," "Timido," and "Johnny," received a 20-year prison term, also followed by three years of supervised release. Their convictions are related to a pattern of racketeering activity, including kidnapping and violent acts that bolstered the gang's intimidating reputation. In a statement obtained by the U.S. Attorney's Office, U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson emphasized the threat posed by MS-13, stating, "MS-13 is one of the most dangerous and ruthless gangs in the country."
The well-coordinated investigations, carried out by multiple law enforcement agencies, uncovered a litany of criminal activities. These offenses were intended to maintain and expand MS-13's stronghold, as well as to discipline and retaliate against anyone perceived to undermine the gang. Buruca, at one time the leader of the Hollywood Locos Salvatrucha Clique in Charlotte, was implicated in violent crimes ranging from extortion to aggravated kidnapping.
For instance, court documents provide evidence that Buruca once fired shots at an individual who refused to pay protection money at a nightclub, injuring bystanders in the process. Notably, the same court documents reveal Mancia's violent behavior against rival gang members, verifying an incident where Mancia shot and seriously injured a member of a competing gang, as per the information from the U.S. Attorney's Office. Other gang members tied to the Hollywood Locos Salvatrucha Clique have also been sentenced, further fragmenting the gang's control.
The implications of these convictions are vast, as they dismantle a faction that had spread its influence across the Eastern Seaboard. This is evident in the praise directed at the cooperating law enforcement agencies, as Special Agent in Charge of the FBI, Charlotte Division, Reid Davis stated, "the FBI and our law enforcement partners remain laser focused to stop the threat. Today's sentences demonstrate our dedication to eradicate MS-13 from the top down."
The defendants are presently in federal custody until they are assigned to a federal prison facility. The success of this operation exhibits the dedication and collaborative effort of various law enforcement entities, including the FBI, HSI, Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, and others, in the continuous quest to disrupt the perilous activities perpetrated by gangs like MS-13.
