Weeks after a significant snowstorm in New York City, property owners are facing fines for failing to clear their sidewalks. According to PIX11, the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has issued nearly 800 additional citations in recent days, bringing the total number of fines since the storm on January 25 to 3,534.
The snowstorm brought record snowfall to the city, with Central Park recording 11.4 inches and neighborhoods such as Washington Heights receiving 14.9 inches. Patch reported that major sites, including JFK and LaGuardia Airports, were covered with more than 10 inches of snow, highlighting the extensive cleanup required for homeowners, businesses, and city operations.
The DSNY emphasized that failing to remove snow from sidewalks is considered a safety concern. Property owners are required to clear sidewalks by 12:30 p.m. the day after a snowfall. Penalties for noncompliance start at $150 for a first offense and can increase to $350 for additional violations.
