Last night, a police operation in New Bedford took an unexpected turn when two detectives, originally en route to support patrol officers, were involved in a vehicle collision at the crossroads of County and Thompson Streets. In disclosing the events, the City of New Bedford Police Department's official social media account emphasized that the detectives themselves were not part of the initial pursuit that had triggered the emergency response.
Amidst the chaos, two officers were injured, yet according to the police department's account, their injuries were not severe enough to keep them hospitalized. "We want to share that the two officers involved have since been released from the hospital. They are OK and continuing to recover," the department's post read. The statement sought to also expressly clarify that no high-speed chase was associated with this incident, contradicting any emerging narrative attempting to paint a more dramatic picture of the events.
The aftermath of the collision led to the arrest of two individuals. The charges laid upon them were serious, including Operating Under the Influence and a slew of additional motor vehicle and drug offenses. While the specifics of the offenses have not been fully disclosed, the New Bedford Police Department assured the public that the matter is actively under investigation.
