In a peculiar encounter on Bourbon Street, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division agents confiscated a live alligator from an individual during the early hours of Saturday, Feb. 14. According to an LDWF press release, Eurell D. Johnson, 25, of New Roads was arrested on multiple charges, including being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, possession of marijuana, and having a live alligator.
The incident unfolded as LDWF agents on routine patrol spotted Johnson at around 1:30 a.m, walking the 400 block with a three to four-foot alligator in tow. Upon engagement, they discovered not only the reptile but also a firearm and marijuana in his possession. It turned out that Johnson, a convicted felon, was violating the law by carrying a firearm. The agents seized the items and later booked Johnson into the Orleans Parish Jail.
Authorities reminded the public that the possession of a live alligator without appropriate permits is illegal. The crime levied against Johnson carries a fine ranging from $400 to $950 and could lead to up to 120 days in jail. Moreover, the charges for a convicted felon found with a firearm can result in far stiffer penalties, including a fine between $1,000 to $5,000 and a potential five to 20 years behind bars. The illegal possession of marijuana could add up to a $100 fine to his list of potential penalties, according to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
The operation was executed by a team including Senior Agent Grayson Parker, Sgt. James Bruce, Sgt. Emily Sexton, and Sgt. Josh Harris. After the alligator was safely retrieved, it was handed over to the on-call LDWF biologist, ensuring the animal was treated according to proper safety and ecological guidelines. The pistol and marijuana were also seized as evidence in accordance with the investigation.
