New York State residents should note a temporary closure of DMV offices statewide. According to the Gothamist, offices will close from 2 p.m. today until February 18, allowing for a major technology upgrade intended to improve customer service and streamline staff operations.
All DMV services, including in-person appointments, online transactions, and phone services, will not be available during the downtime. New Yorkers are advised to complete urgent license renewals or ID applications online before the closure. Those wishing to change their political party enrollment for the primaries also face a pressing deadline, with the DMV setting 2 p.m. today as the cutoff, as the state Board of Elections' voter registration portal remains open until tomorrow.
Officials have outlined the goals for the DMV’s technology upgrades, which will replace outdated systems, including software applications that have been in use for several decades, with a single, modernized system. The update is intended to modernize DMV operations for both customers and staff. Following the upgrade, beginning February 18, all in-person visits will temporarily be by appointment only to allow the new system to function smoothly, as per BTPM.
Around 30 million files will be transferred to the new system, enabling more consolidated transactions and shorter wait times. The upgrade will expand online services, reducing the need for in-person visits. Residents of Erie and Niagara counties can schedule appointments through their county websites or contact centers, according to announcements from the clerks.
