
The search for North Carolina's most accomplished citizens is once again underway with the opening of nominations for the 2026 North Carolina Award, a statement released by the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) details. As the highest civilian honor in the state, it seeks to acknowledge the standout individuals who have significantly contributed to the fields of literature, science, fine arts, and public service. Nominations are open through April 15, and they can be submitted by anyone who wishes to recognize an outstanding North Carolinian.
For those interested in putting a name forward, a simplified nomination form is ready to easily fill out on the DNCR's website. Post initial submission, the North Carolina Awards Committee is set to thoroughly review entries and may reach out for to obtain additional information, as they work towards making their final selections this summer. In a process that seems designed to ensure the most deserving get to stand in the limelight, the winners will be officially recognized at a ceremony later this year.
Past recipients of this distinguished accolade include cultural icons and pioneers such as Maya Angelou and Doc Watson, along with other influential figures spanning various domains. The 2025 iteration of the ceremony, which featured a memorable gathering in Asheville, managed to not just celebrate the achievements of Woody Platt and Buddy Melton for Fine Arts, Wiley Cash for Literature, and others but also contributed significantly to the Hurricane Helene recovery efforts by raising nearly $200,000, as noted by the DNCR.
