In a span of just over one hour yesterday morning, North Attleboro firefighters, along with multiple aid agencies, tackled two separate house fires leading to the displacement of residents; in both instances there were no critical injuries reported. The first blaze broke out shortly after midnight at a multi-family home on 50 Oakhurst Street, where heavy flames were observed coming from the wall, which extended to the ceiling, as stated by Boston 25 News. Two trapped individuals on the second floor were successfully rescued with the help of North Attleboro aid forces, and the fire was under control within 25 minutes after crews arrived.
While the Oakhurst Street incident was being contained, a second fire alert from 60 Wendy Drive was reported around 1:36 a.m., with the call to dispatch indicating a chair was on fire in the basement, according to WPRI. Responders who had been at Oakhurst Street, including North Attleboro, Attleboro, and Foxboro fire crews, swiftly redirected to the new emergency; when they arrived, heavy smoke billowed from the house, and a large fire was raging in the basement.
The response to the second occurrence was met with a third alarm, summoning additional firefighting departments from Wrentham, Norton, Norfolk, Walpole, Plainville, Rehoboth, Franklin, Easton, and Pawtucket as well as support from the Providence Canteen and Mansfield Emergency Management Agency with the fire being brought under control within roughly 45 minutes. Though one Wendy Drive resident received medical aid on the scene, confirmed by WPRI, they didn't necessitate hospital transportation and no other injuries emerged from either event.
The American Red Cross is providing assistance to the displaced occupants from the Oakhurst Street domicile, while the displaced from Wendy Drive are reported to be receiving support from family. Investigations into the cause of both fires are currently in progress by the North Attleboro Fire Department, and at the moment, the incidents are not being treated as suspicious. Fire crews cleared both scenes around 6 a.m., with updates to follow as additional information comes to light.
