CapMetro police are searching for a man they say stabbed a passenger three times aboard a northeast Austin bus on Saturday, Jan. 24. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment and has told officers they intend to pursue charges. Investigators say they secured a warrant for the suspect’s arrest after reviewing surveillance footage from the bus.
According to an arrest affidavit and video reviewed by investigators, the attack unfolded around 4 p.m. on Jan. 24 aboard bus No. 2706 near 7900 Cameron Road. Surveillance footage shows a man rise from a seat in the middle of the bus, walk toward the back, and then allegedly launch into the attack on another rider. CapMetro Police identified the suspect as 45-year-old Sergio Diaz after comparing the bus video with his Texas ID photo. Investigators say the victim suffered two stab wounds to the upper left back and one to the upper left chest. These details were reported by CBS Austin.
CapMetro’s public-safety plan describes a three-part approach built around ambassadors, community intervention specialists, and transit police, and urges riders to call 9-1-1 in an emergency or the GO Line at 512-474-1200 for non-emergencies. The agency has stepped up onboard surveillance and asks customers to note the four-digit vehicle number when they report an incident. For more on reporting procedures and the agency’s safety steps, see CapMetro.
Charges and legal status
Diaz is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and a Travis County judge signed a warrant for his arrest on Feb. 6. Police say the warrant was issued after they reviewed the bus footage and compared it with Diaz’s ID photo, and they note that the investigation is still active. CBS Austin reported those details.
CapMetro is asking anyone who witnessed the incident or was on board that bus to come forward. Riders are encouraged to provide the route, stop ID, or nearest intersectio,n and the four-digit bus number when they make a report. For non-emergencies, witnesses can call the GO Line, and the agency’s public-safety page explains how tips are handled and how transit officials investigate onboard crimes. See CapMetro for more information.
Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing and that they will continue to work the case as they search for the suspect. Anyone with information is urged to contact law enforcement through standard emergency or non-emergency channels.
