In a concerted effort, the attorneys general are seeking a hard look into YouTube's content moderation practices after Alphabet admitted to Congress in September 2025 that it was under pressure from senior Biden administration officials to temper the spread of COVID-19-related content, even when it did not transgress the company's own rules—the sort of revelations that breed questions about the transparency and evenhandedness in moderating online speech. Drummond stated, “Oklahomans deserve transparency and fairness from powerful technology platforms that shape public discourse,” adding that “When companies publicly claim to value free expression but privately suppress lawful speech, particularly on matters of public concern, that raises serious questions that demand answers.”
According to a letter shared by the Oklahoma Attorney General's Office, the attorneys general interrogated whether YouTube's actions resonated with their public commitments to protect free expression, with the coalition pushing specifically for data regarding whether creators underwent individualized treatment or were held to additional scrutiny, their visibility dimmed with no prior warning. Furthermore, the missive requests documents relevant to the platform's handling of several well-known conservative channels and made clear the expectation of a response from Alphabet by April 16.
