The recent snap of unusually cold weather in Orange County, FL has compelled the closure of one of its elementary schools due to significant facility issues. As reported by WFTV, Summerlake Elementary School will remain closed today, February 2. Initially, Dillard Street Elementary was also to shut its doors, but after indefatigable efforts by maintenance teams, it will welcome students back. The Orange County Public Schools district, cognizant of the frigid conditions, has given the green light to all other schools to operate as usual.
In response to the extreme cold, maintenance teams have been commended for working tirelessly, having been working throughout the weekend to ameliorate the facility issues at Summerlake. Orange County Public Schools shared in a statement that after a thorough evaluation of school facilities, "the only school that still remains to have a facility issue due to the extreme cold is Summerlake Elementary," according to ClickOrlando. The district has conveyed deep acknowledgment of the disruption the weather has caused and prompted the school community to dress accordingly and tread cautiously on Monday morning.
Officials are keen to stress that the district will keep a vigilant eye on the facilities overnight. Through the course of these sub-zero trials, the district avows that the well-being of its students and staff anchors its every decision. The families of both Summerlake and Dillard Street Elementary Schools were offered timely updates, with a promise that any substantial overnight changes would be communicated promptly.
