Residents and visitors in Orlando can expect a notable dip in temperatures following a passing cold front today. According to the National Weather Service Melbourne FL, Floridians will experience cold air settling in with lows in the 30s and potential wind chill values in the mid 20s to low-30s. This shift is significant enough to have triggered a Cold Weather Advisory across most of east central Florida, in effect from 1 AM to 9 AM on Friday, as specified by the forecast. It's a time to bundle up, practice safe heating strategies, and bring the pets indoors.
Prior to the temperature drop, the cold front is slated to bring a welcome, albeit light, rainfall to the area. Nonetheless, the quarter-inch or less of precipitation is insufficient to significantly alter the current drought conditions. It's crucial to prepare to properly protect sensitive plants overnight, despite the low confidence in patchy frost development, due to the persistent winds forecasted. The National Weather Service has commented on the gusty conditions that will accompany the cold, as northwest winds are expected to increase to 10 to 15 mph, with gusts of 25 to 30 mph possible.
Boaters should be especially cautious as poor to hazardous conditions are expected to prevail on the local Atlantic waters. A Small Craft Advisory is in place starting from 10 AM today through the weekend for offshore areas, due to strengthening winds behind the cold front with winds reaching 20 to 25 knots and seas building 6 to 9 feet. The marine forecast warns that it will likely take some time for conditions to improve, with an additional front moving through Friday and a backdoor front anticipated for Sunday.
The outlook for fire weather conditions similarly warrants attention. With the front's passage, breezy and dry conditions are forecasted to persist into the weekend, bringing down relative humidity values below 35% and maintaining breezy conditions into Saturday. According to the National Weather Service, sensitive to near-critical fire weather conditions are forecast across much of east central Florida through at least this weekend. This holds potential for sensitive conditions to continue into the early part of next week, although there is more uncertainty for that period.
As for temperatures, daytime highs are expected to stay below normal post-front, mainly in the low to mid 60s, before a slight warming trend brings them to the mid 60s to low 70s over the weekend. Nighttime temps are predicted to hit the 30s tonight, then slightly moderate over the subsequent days. With these fluctuations in weather patterns, residents should stay informed and prepare for a cooler end to their week.
