Travelers on Interstate 70 near the I-64/U.S. 61 interchange should expect overnight closures this weekend, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) announced. The shutdowns, affecting both directions, are part of the ongoing Improve I-70 Warrenton to Wentzville Project, during which bridge girders will be installed using large cranes.
MoDOT announced that all westbound lanes of I-70 at the I-64/U.S. 61 interchange will be closed Wednesday, Feb. 11, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., with westbound traffic detouring onto northbound Route 61, turning around at Pittman Avenue, and returning to I-70 via the designated ramps. The following night, Thursday, during the same overnight hours, eastbound lanes will be closed, requiring drivers to detour onto eastbound I-64 before rejoining eastbound I-70 using the ramps and turnarounds outlined in MoDOT’s announcement.
The Improve I-70 Warrenton to Wentzville Project, designed to expand and upgrade nearly 200 miles of I-70 between Blue Springs and Wentzville, is funded through Missouri’s FY2024 budget, which provided $2.8 billion for the highway’s development. The project, which began in 2025, is scheduled to continue through 2028, adding lanes and modernizing existing infrastructure to accommodate future traffic needs.
MoDOT warned that if the bridge girder installation encounters unforeseen delays, an additional overnight closure could be added on Friday, to complete the remaining work necessary for the bridge installation. Travelers are advised to monitor the MoDOT website for updates and plan their routes accordingly during these overnight closures.
