A Gogebic County jury has found 33-year-old Isaac Sawyer guilty on six felony drug charges tied to a May 2025 traffic stop in Ironwood, wrapping up a two-day trial with verdicts in about 45 minutes. Sawyer is being held in jail while the court orders a pre-sentence investigation ahead of a sentencing date.

According to Upper Michigan's Source, Gogebic County Prosecuting Attorney Nicholas Jacobs said the charges trace back to a May 11, 2025 investigation by the Gogebic Iron Area Narcotics Team. Officers reportedly watched a vehicle pull into an Ironwood motel around 5 a.m. that morning. Jacobs told the outlet that Sawyer was convicted on counts including possession with intent to deliver meth, two counts of conspiracy to deliver meth, conspiracy to deliver heroin, possession with intent to deliver heroin and maintaining a drug house. Prosecutors also charged Sawyer as a four-time habitual offender, a status that could significantly increase his potential prison time.

How the Motel Stop Turned Into a Major Bust

Investigators say the bust was the culmination of days of surveillance and a GPS tracking order on passenger Shane Reinfelder, who authorities suspected of bringing meth into Gogebic County. When the vehicle arrived at the motel, officers say Reinfelder ran and was quickly subdued. Deputy Cody Smith's K-9 Debwe then alerted to suspected controlled substances inside the vehicle, WUPM reports. That alert led officers to search the car, where they reported finding a significant stash of drugs and packaging materials.

What Investigators Say They Pulled From the Car

Authorities say officers seized about 130 grams of methamphetamine and roughly 27 grams of heroin, along with cocaine, psilocybin mushrooms, assorted pills, two scales, gem bags and other paraphernalia. Most of the items were hidden under the driver-side dashboard, according to Upper Michigan's Source. Officials said Sawyer was renting the vehicle at the time of the stop and that multiple agencies backed up the Gogebic Iron Area Narcotics Team during the operation. Two co-defendants were arrested alongside Sawyer at the scene.

Co-Defendants Already Sentenced, Sawyer Awaits His Turn

Both co-defendants, identified as Layla Filipek and Shane Reinfelder, have already been convicted and sentenced in related cases. Reinfelder received a lengthy prison term in November, WUPM reported. Sawyer now faces the full slate of charges outlined by prosecutors and will move through the court's pre-sentence investigation process before a judge sets his punishment. The Gogebic County Prosecutor's Office has not offered additional public comment beyond what is contained in court filings and local coverage.
