A 31-year-old man was killed yesterday morning after being struck by a car on a quiet stretch of Kienlen Avenue in North County. The crash occurred shortly after 5 a.m. near Wabada Avenue. Authorities reported that the man was standing in the northbound second lane on Kienlen Avenue when he was struck by a vehicle’s bumper and was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
State patrol outlines the early-morning crash
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, cited by First Alert 4, the driver, a 22-year-old man, was operating a 2014 Ford Escape. Investigators say he attempted to brake for the pedestrian, but the SUV’s bumper still struck the man, who died shortly after the impact. The driver was not injured.
Deadly year for people on foot
This latest fatality adds to a troubling trend in the region. A Trailnet crash report, noted by St. Louis Public Radio, found that 23 pedestrians were killed in the city of St. Louis and 36 in St. Louis County in 2024, marking it as the deadliest recent year for pedestrians.
Calls grow louder for safer streets
Local street-safety advocates say incidents like this are not isolated. They cite wide, fast-moving arterial roads and a lack of crosswalks and sidewalks as major factors driving the rise in pedestrian deaths, according to St. Louis Magazine. Organizations such as Trailnet are calling for targeted traffic-calming measures, lower speed limits, and increased investment in northside corridors, where walking and transit use are most common.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol shared details of the crash with First Alert 4, which first reported the incident. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s name. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
