What started as a routine drug search near Highway 76 in Haywood County ended with a Brownsville probation officer in handcuffs, four people jailed, and a house full of red flags, according to authorities.
Agents say a Friday search of the home turned up cocaine, a handgun, and more than $22,000 in suspected drug money. Outside, investigators reported finding malnourished dogs chained up, while several people were discovered hiding inside. Four individuals were taken into custody at the scene and now face multiple felony charges, including drug possession, weapon offenses, and animal cruelty.
Agents Detail Cash, Coke, and a Gun
According to Action News 5, West Tennessee Drug Task Force agents seized electronic scales and $22,210 in suspected drug proceeds, along with nearly a quarter-ounce of cocaine, a .357 handgun, and roughly an ounce of marijuana. One man found in a back bedroom allegedly had both the weapon and the narcotics, and investigators later learned he was wanted on a felony property charge out of Shelby County.
Probation Officer Walks Into Active Raid
WBBJ reports that a woman who arrived at the house in the middle of the search was later identified as 39-year-old Johnetta Whitley, a misdemeanor probation officer contracted to a private company. Authorities say Whitley told agents she was there to see a probationer but could not produce credentials and was denied entry. Investigators also say she was dating one of the men taken into custody.
“Drug search warrants are never routine,” West Tennessee Task Force Director Johnie Carter told WBBJ, as the scene unfolded into something far more complicated than a simple knock-and-search.
Shower Hiding Spot, Multiple Felony Counts
Four people were arrested at the home and booked into the Haywood County Jail. Action News 5 reports they face felony drug possession, weapon offenses, animal cruelty, and money-laundering charges. Task force agents say one woman was found hiding in a shower, while two other men were located in different parts of the house during the sweep.
Grand Jury Indicts Probation Officer
Agents consulted with 28th District Attorney General Frederick Agee and presented an indictment for official misconduct to the Haywood County grand jury. WBBJ reports the grand jury returned a true bill on Monday, Feb. 23.
Whitley was taken into custody without incident and booked. The Office of the District Attorney General for the 28th Judicial District will prosecute the cases as the investigation moves forward.
