Residents of a Midwest City neighborhood have reason to be thankful for their vigilant neighbors and skilled local firefighters after a kitchen fire was rapidly contained earlier today. The Midwest City Fire Department reported on social media that Blue Shift units promptly responded to a structure fire at a single-story duplex on the 500 block of Babb. The source of the fire was traced to an unattended pot of grease, which had been left cooking on a stove.
The situation could have turned dire, were it not for the quick action of a neighbor who noticed the smoke and the swift response of the firefighters on scene. "Thanks to a quick-thinking neighbor and a rapid entry by our firefighters, the fire—which started as an unattended pot of grease on the stove—was quickly extinguished," detailed a Facebook post from the department. The fire was successfully confined to the kitchen area, and no injuries were reported.
In the wake of the incident, the Midwest City Fire Department issued a safety reminder about the dangers of kitchen fires, which continue to be the leading cause of home fires and injuries. The department emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant while cooking: "Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling food," their social media post cautioned. Home cooks are also advised to keep a lid nearby, so they can quickly smother a small grease fire, and importantly, never throw water on a grease fire, which can exacerbate the flames.
The fire department also addressed the local community's unique residential landscapes, noting that many duplexes in the affected area have challenging layouts, which can complicate emergency responses. Because time is of the essence in an emergency situation, homeowners should ensure that their house numbers are clearly visible from the street for expedient service. The post concluded with praise for Sgt. Beshears and the Blue Shift crew for their proficient work in managing the emergency. The department's effective communication with the public reminds us all that awareness and preparation are key components to community safety.
