An 18-year-old from Rochester, identified as Joshua Damon Edwards, has been charged with assault with intent to murder following an altercation that escalated into a stabbing at Oakland University. The incident occurred on February 5 outside Van Wagoner Hall, where the unnamed 18-year-old victim, also from Rochester, was found suffering multiple stab wounds, as per reports from Clickondetroit.
Last week's violent episode on Oakland University's campus resulted in an injury for one, an hours-long lockdown, and it has now led to Edwards' arrest during a traffic stop on February 10. He is expected to be arraigned today, as detailed by CBS News Detroit in a recently published article. Oakland University Police Chief Mark Gordon, in a statement obtained by Audacy, emphasized that "The person responsible is in custody," and while stressing the incident seemed to be a targeted event, he advised the community to maintain safe practices around campus.
The response from law enforcement featured collaboration between the University Police and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, leveraging the campus security camera system, which was crucial in identifying the suspect, according to Chief Gordon's praise of the collective effort. Meanwhile, the victim, who is not a student at the university, was transported to McLaren Hospital and is currently in recovery, as reported by CBS News Detroit.
With one assailant still at large, police are bolstering security measures in the residence halls especially during evening hours, and the Oakland University community remains on alert for another male suspect, described as being in his late 20s, with curly hair, and a height ranging from about 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, per the detailed description provided by Clickondetroit. Chief Gordon extended his gratitude to the public for their helpful information leading to the speedy identification and arrest of Edwards, and encouraged anyone with additional details to reach out to the department at 248-370-3331 to assist in apprehending the second suspect and ensuring the safety of the campus environment.
