Fare & Fellow is pulling out of Park Point. The Triangle coffee shop, which opened its Research Triangle Park location in May 2024, will close the campus cafe this week after less than two years in operation. Staff are winding down service as the shop prepares to serve its final customers, following an announcement first shared on the cafe’s social media channels and then picked up by local reporters.
According to The News & Observer, Fare & Fellow posted on social media that its Park Point cafe at 4001 NC Highway 54 "will serve final customers this week." The News & Observer also reported that the Park Point shop opened in May 2024 and that the company previously ran a Morrisville location that has since closed. The outlet noted that Fare & Fellow’s downtown Durham cafe will remain open while the Park Point site shuts down.
Park Point describes itself as a 100-acre adaptive-reuse campus and lists Fare & Fellow among its dining options at 4001 E. Hwy. 54. The redevelopment aims to cluster offices, life-science tenants and amenities in a compact, walkable hub, which has helped shape demand for weekday cafes and lunch spots. For workers on the campus, the Fare & Fellow counter offered a convenient grab-and-go stop as well as a sit-down option during the workweek.
The Fare & Fellow website continues to list a downtown Durham address at 411 W. Chapel Hill St., with weekday hours of 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The menu there features breakfast and lunch items such as sandwiches, burritos and avocado toast. The brand relies on its online ordering pages and social channels to update customers on hours, menu details and operations. Regulars who counted on the Park Point cafe for their morning coffee will now need to head to the Chapel Hill Street shop or other nearby cafes.
Short Run In RTP
Fare & Fellow’s Park Point stint was brief. The shop debuted on the campus in May 2024 after the company announced several expansion plans, although some proposed locations, including a spot at Raleigh Iron Works, never materialized. The News & Observer reported that the company has been reshaping its footprint over the past year as certain locations opened and others closed. Owners have not publicly shared a detailed business explanation beyond the social media post announcing the closure.
Campus Shifts And What It Means For Cafes
Retailers on office campuses can be vulnerable to shifting work schedules and redevelopment strategies as landlords reposition properties for mixed use. The Research Triangle Park planning effort RTP 3.0 is reworking how retail and amenities fit into the park, which can change the weekday foot traffic that independent cafes rely on. For small local operators, running multiple locations in the Triangle’s office corridors has become trickier as demand patterns evolve.
Customers looking for updates can check Fare & Fellow’s website along with the company’s social media feeds for the latest hours and notices. The Chapel Hill Street cafe remains the brand’s active Durham location while the Park Point space is cleared and prepped for whatever comes next. Hoodline will keep an eye out for news on a replacement tenant or new use for the Park Point retail spot.
