San Jose woke up under clear skies today and is headed for a warm afternoon, with highs near 76°F and light south-southeast breezes. A few pockets of valley fog may cling to low-lying neighborhoods before burning off by mid-morning. Overnight lows will slide into the mid-40s, so even after a springlike day, plan on a jacket once the sun goes down.
Afternoon Warmth Inland
Full sun is on tap across the Santa Clara Valley, with temperatures marching through the 60s by late morning and topping out in the mid-70s by early afternoon. Winds should stay light, around 1 to 5 mph, which makes this a prime day for outdoor errands, dog walks, and lunch in the park. After sunset, readings will drop back into the 40s and 50s, bringing a noticeably cooler feel after the daytime warmth.
Coastal Danger: Big Surf And Sneaker Waves
The sunny skies might be tempting, but the shoreline is a different story. The National Weather Service has a Beach Hazards Statement in effect through the early hours of Friday, February 6, along with a High Surf Advisory from 4:00 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6 through 9:00 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7. Forecasters expect breaking waves in the 14 to 22 foot range. Those conditions mean powerful rip currents and dangerous sneaker waves, so stay off jetties, piers, and rocks, and remain out of the water from Sonoma down through Monterey County. For the full advisory, see the National Weather Service.
Fog, Commute And Weekend Outlook
Pockets of morning fog are possible again Friday and Saturday before sunshine returns, so give yourself a little extra time for early commutes through low-lying parts of the city. The forecast stays mostly dry into the weekend, with a slight chance of light rain late Sunday into Monday, mainly for the North Bay and the coastal ranges. Highs are expected to slip a few degrees as a cooler pattern returns. Offshore mariners should heed small craft advisories and postpone nonessential trips until seas calm later in the weekend.
