A tragic incident unfolded Wednesday afternoon in Sandy Springs when a 2-year-old was fatally shot at the Carlyle of Sandy Springs apartment complex. Police have confirmed that the shooting occurred around 2 p.m. and the toddler, found with gunshot wounds, did not survive despite attempts by medics to save him at the scene, as per FOX 5 Atlanta.
The boy's father, Richard Willis, was arrested following the incident and faces charges of second-degree murder and cruelty to children, also of the second degree. Willis was taken to Fulton County Jail, where he remains as the investigation continues. A section of the apartment complex was sectioned off with crime scene tape, as observed by residents and reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, the area was swarming with law enforcement and media, with helicopters circling above.
"I heard it was a 2-year-old in the neighborhood who accidentally got a hold of a gun," Aalyhia Leggard, a resident of the complex, told FOX 5 Atlanta. Ryan Joseph, another neighbor, expressed his shock: "It’s very shocking and upsetting for sure," saying to the outlet, "That shouldn’t be happening to any child or adult."
Further details released by CBS News Atlanta indicate that the child gained access to an unsecured firearm, which led to the fatal incident. The father now faces grave charges, and the lives of those within the community, already thrust into the throes of mourning, will likely echo with the reverberations of this incident for some time. As the Sandy Springs community deals with the aftermath of this senseless tragedy, the conversation about firearm safety and the responsibilities that come with it is sure to intensify.
