Tax season can be a thief’s paradise, but Hillsborough County is giving residents a way to fight back with ShredFest 2026. According to Hillsborough County's announcement, the event will provide free document shredding and electronic device disposal, aiming to prevent identity theft during a time when sensitive information is frequently exchanged. ShredFest 2026 will happen on Saturday, March 7, from 8 to 11 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park.
The County's Regulatory Compliance division of Hillsborough County Code Enforcement is hosting this 10th annual event. It lines up with National Consumer Protection Week and offers a proactive step folks can take to protect their personal information. Residents can bring up to three copy-paper-sized boxes or kitchen-sized trash bags of paper for shredding, which includes old bank statements, unnecessary bills, and expired insurance policies, as per Hillsborough County's instructions.
For those planning to participate, ShredFest has arranged a drive-thru service, so you can stay in your car while dropping off the documents and devices. Experts in consumer protection will be present to answer any queries. And don't worry about the local landmarks; Veterans Memorial Park and its monuments will remain open to the public during the event. All of this comes at no cost and is available on a first-come, first-served basis, though commercial shredding isn't on the table.
