Light snow and patchy fog made the Thursday morning drive across Minneapolis a slog, with temps stuck in the mid-20s and visibility in spots dropping below two miles. Many neighborhood streets are still snow-covered, so drivers are easing off the gas and padding their commute times.
Morning Commute
According to the NWS Twin Cities, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 8 AM CST Thursday, February 19. Forecasters call for a bit more light accumulation, generally under an inch with a few spots nudging up to around one inch.
The advisory notes that snow-covered roads will create hazardous travel across Hennepin, Ramsey and several other metro counties, so drivers should expect slower speeds and longer-than-normal travel times through the morning rush.
Travel And Transit
Side streets, untreated ramps and bridges are expected to be the slickest trouble spots this morning. Officials are urging drivers to leave earlier than usual, ease off the accelerator and give road crews and plows plenty of space to work.
For live road and highway updates, motorists can call 511 or check 511 MN before heading out.
Airport Outlook
Low clouds and lingering light snow are creating IFR conditions at MSP through the morning hours. The NWS Twin Cities expects the snow at KMSP to taper and largely end by midday Thursday.
Air travelers should stay in close contact with their airline for any early-day delays and plan for extra time at the airport in case ground operations and deicing slow things down.
Looking Ahead
After Thursday the weather pattern turns quieter but colder, with highs dropping into the 20s from Friday through Sunday along with breezy northwest winds. A milder push may return by Tuesday, with highs aiming for the upper 30s.
Anyone with evening plans or midweek travel next week should keep an eye on updated local forecasts as the pattern evolves.
