Sunday, February 8, 2026 — Portland woke up in a gray mood, with light rain, mist, and temperatures hovering near 46°F at Portland International Airport. Visibility is down to around 4 miles, and the wet theme is not going anywhere fast. Expect steady rain through the day with a high near 51°F and temperatures slipping back into the upper 40s by late afternoon. New rainfall totals of about a quarter to a half inch are on tap across the metro.
Afternoon Commute
Low clouds and patchy fog will team up with the rain to slow things down this afternoon, leaving roads slick and brake lights glowing. Drivers should build in extra time and keep headlights on whenever visibility drops. Portland International reported low ceilings and scattered showers this morning, and brief flight delays are possible as those ceilings only gradually improve into mid-morning. According to the National Weather Service Portland, the chance of precipitation today is near 90%, and the heaviest bands will favor areas south of downtown.
Marine And Mountain Passes
Out on the water, conditions will get rougher tonight as a west swell builds and coastal waters turn choppy. Small Craft Advisories are expected for the coast and the Columbia River Bar through early Tuesday, so recreational boaters are better off staying tied up. In the mountains, snow levels will drop to roughly 3,000–3,500 feet Sunday night into Monday, boosting the odds of accumulating snow at the higher Cascade passes. Anyone heading over Santiam or Willamette Passes should keep an eye on conditions and be ready for chains or traction requirements. For background on how this system is unfolding, see our Feb. 7 update.
Looking Ahead
Showers hang around into Monday with a gradual fade Monday night. After that, the pattern briefly cuts us a break, with drier weather likely from Tuesday through Thursday before rain chances climb again late in the week. If you are headed for the coast or planning a trip over the Cascades, check forecasts and road reports before you go and give yourself extra travel time during the wet stretches.
