Early Wednesday evening in South Memphis, a person riding a bicycle was struck and killed on East Mallory Road, and the driver kept going, according to police. The deadly crash happened around 6:36 p.m. beneath the railroad overpass near South Third Street. The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, and Memphis police say the case is still under active investigation.
According to Action News 5, officers initially responded to a "pedestrian-struck" call and later confirmed the victim had been on a bicycle. The outlet reports that when officers arrived, they found the cyclist unresponsive, and the person was later pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released any description of the vehicle involved.
The same stretch of East Mallory has seen deadly crashes before, and the Memphis Police Department has previously posted hit-and-run alerts tied to that corridor. Investigators are again asking for the public's help, urging anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH. Local outlets have also tracked other serious bike-related hit-and-runs in Memphis, including a case last November that left a bicyclist critically injured.
Investigators Ask For Tips
Police say they are still piecing together what happened and are holding back many details while they chase leads. As Action News 5 reports, investigators have not released a vehicle description and have only said that the hit-and-run remains under investigation. Under Tennessee law, leaving the scene of a crash that results in someone's death is a felony offense that can bring prison time, fines, and license penalties, according to the Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security.
