A 20-year-old woman is facing a slate of felony charges after a South Memphis shooting last Wednesday left a Volkswagen Jetta riddled with bullets, its driver shaken but alive, and the car wrapped around a wooden pole. Investigators say every tire on the Jetta was punctured, and the woman they believe pulled the trigger was later picked out in a lineup and hit with a six-figure bond as the case moves into the courts.
What police say
Memphis police say the gunfire erupted in the 1300 block of Driver Street in South Memphis last Wednesday, where officers arrived to find two spent shell casings in front of a home and a live round nearby. According to investigators, the suspect opened fire on the victim, striking the Jetta, then fired two additional shots at the victim's boyfriend before taking off in a Nissan. That version of events, including the subsequent lineup identification of the suspect, was reported by WREG.
Charges and what they mean
Police identified the suspect as Ateariny Boyd and charged her with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, and one vandalism count tied to damage estimated between $2,500 and $10,000. Her bond was set at $310,000.
Under Tennessee law, using a gun during certain serious crimes is prosecuted as its own offense, typically stacked on top of the underlying charge, as outlined by FindLaw. The state defines criminal attempt separately, grading it below the completed crime in most situations, according to Justia.
Evidence and arrest
Officers reported recovering two shell casings in front of the residence and a live round on the ground, along with visible bullet damage to the Volkswagen. The victim told police all four of her tires had been punctured.
Investigators say the shooter left in a Nissan after the gunfire and was later identified in a lineup by the boyfriend. Authorities also accused Boyd of violating bail conditions that dated back to January 2026. Those details came from Memphis police and were reported by WREG.
Next steps
Boyd was booked into the Shelby County jail with a bond set at $310,000 and is awaiting arraignment in criminal court. Prosecutors are expected to review the case file and decide on formal charges at her next appearance. Memphis police say the investigation is still active and are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the department as the case works its way through the legal system.
