St. Johns County will host a community open house for the SUN (Shared-Use Nonmotorized) Trail River-to-Sea Loop project on February 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. The event will be held at the Anastasia Island Branch of the St. Johns County Public Library System, 124 Sea Grove Main St., St. Augustine Beach. Attendees can receive project updates, ask questions, and discuss the design of two trail segments with county and Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) representatives.
St. Johns County announced on its website that the adjacent trail segments—from Red Cox Drive to Santander Street and along A1A Beach Boulevard from Pope Road to State Road A1A—will be presented together to improve trail continuity and support coordinated community planning. The project aims to expand pedestrian and cyclist access while enhancing future transportation efficiency. During the design phase, strategies to minimize impacts on local neighborhoods and businesses will be a key focus.
The River-to-Sea Loop is planned as a nearly 260-mile multiuse trail network connecting five counties in Northeast Florida. It will be part of the larger East Coast Greenway and is designed to improve connections between communities while protecting the region’s unique environmental resources.
In St. Johns County, the trail project is a collaboration between county and state agencies, with multiple segments planned for gradual development. The effort aims to expand recreational opportunities, support eco-tourism, and improve access to local businesses. While both county and FDOT segments remain in the design phase, future FDOT funding cycles could provide construction support. According to the county, the project aligns with its goals of developing sustainable infrastructure, protecting natural resources, and expanding transportation options accessible to all residents.
Project details will be available for review at the open house, with additional updates provided as planning and design work continues.
