San Francisco's community was jarred by the news of an arrest made in connection to a recent homicide in Columbia Heights. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) reported that a suspect has been taken into custody for the murder of Nyesha Walden-Hatcher, a 27-year-old D.C. resident. The incident, which shocked her neighborhood, transpired in the early hours of February 2, when a 911 hang-up led officers to discover Walden-Hatcher with a fatal gunshot wound.
Efforts to swiftly apprehend the individual responsible led law enforcement to 35-year-old Tyjuan Bazemore, who was arrested on February 10 in Middletown, Connecticut. According to a statement by MPD, Bazemore will soon stand to face charges. "On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant, members from the Connecticut Violent Crimes Fugitive Task Force (CVCFTF) arrested 35-year-old Tyjuan Bazemore in Middletown, CT," the MPD relayed. He is expected to quickly go through the extradition process before he can be formally charged with Second Degree Murder While Armed in Washington, D.C.
Details surrounding the circumstances of the shooting remain scarce as the investigation continues. However, the MPD has been vocal in expressing gratitude toward the Connecticut Violent Crimes Fugitive Task Force for their collaboration in the arrest. "MPD would like to thank the Connecticut Violent Crimes Fugitive Task Force (CVCFTF) for their help with locating and arresting the suspect in Connecticut," the MPD department stated.
The community's sense of safety was deeply shaken by the violent act that robbed them of a neighbor and friend. As Walden-Hatcher's loved ones grieve and await justice, the police's commitment to bringing her assailant to face the full weight of the law offers a grim comfort. MPD's message to the public, as they continue trying to piece together this tragedy, serves as a reminder of the continuing fight against violent crime in our cities.
