After a days-long manhunt following a shooting at the Decatur Library, suspect Medicus Brown, 44, has surrendered to the authorities. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Brown turned himself into DeKalb County Jail earlier this week, facing charges including aggravated assault with intent to murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
The search for Brown concluded after deputies performed an operation at the Live Long Hotel located at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Rockbridge Road. It was believed that Brown had taken refuge there. Atlanta News First reports Brown made the decision to turn himself in following the police's hotel operation. DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the suspect was booked shortly thereafter. The grounds of the library became a crime scene on Monday evening, when police, summoned around 5:10 p.m., found an injured adult male inside the building with gunshot wounds.
Responding to the incident, Decatur Police worked quickly to identify Brown as the main suspect by late Monday night. He became a wanted man when the DeKalb County Magistrate Court issued arrest warrants for his capture. Public assistance was initially sought by the police in their endeavor to locate Brown, prior to his voluntary surrender.
Following the shooting, it is necessary for the Decatur Library to remain closed until Monday as explained by DeKalb County officials, who intend to use the time to both support the staff affected by the event and to implement new security measures. "A security assessment" will be conducted in cooperation with library officials by DKPD, though details of these additional safety procedures have yet to be specified, as noted by Atlanta News First. Neither the full extent of the victim's injuries nor their current condition has been disclosed at this time.
