Midtown is about to gain a fresh late-night refuge as Swamp Lounge opens this weekend in the former home of The Second Line. The new spot, tucked beside Swamp Bar on Monroe Avenue, is being billed as a loser, a later option for neighborhood nightlife. Manager Sam Reeves Hill has been steering the buildout and was photographed inside recently while crews wrapped up final touches on the bar.

According to the Daily Memphian, Swamp Lounge is set to debut the weekend of Feb. 26 at 2144 Monroe Ave. The report notes that opening weekend events will be handled through sign-ups for the first few nights and includes photos from a Feb. 12 walkthrough. Staff describes the newcomer as Swamp Bar’s casual cousin, one that will lean into later service hours.

Space swap in Midtown

The Second Line’s move to East Memphis earlier this year left its Monroe Avenue address open for a new idea. As What Now notes, a recent certificate of occupancy filed with Memphis planning lists the space at about 1,000 square feet with an occupancy load of about 75. That approval cleared the way for the Swamp team to turn the former restaurant footprint into a late-night lounge.

What to expect inside

Swamp Bar has already carved out a reputation in Overton Square for craft cocktails and an intimate, late-night setting, with its site listing regular hours and extended service on weekends. The Second Line shows Swamp Bar operating Wednesday through Sunday and staying open later on Fridays and Saturdays. The new lounge appears to be geared toward a smaller, drink-focused crowd that can spill onto nearby patios and keep Midtown foot traffic moving after concerts and other events let out.

Why Midtown cares

The opening adds another twist to the ongoing shuffle of Midtown dining and drinking real estate, giving locals one more spot to linger after late dinners or shows. Swamp Bar first appeared inside The Second Line property in late 2023 and helped knit together the neighborhood’s bar circuit, according to the Memphis Flyer. If the weekend rollout lands smoothly, Overton Square will have yet another excuse to keep the lights burning past 11 p.m.
