Two swastikas were found carved into a portable toilet at Croton Landing Park on Sunday, Feb. 15, according to village officials. Croton-on-Hudson police opened an on-site investigation immediately after the discovery, and the vandalized unit was taken away and replaced as quickly as possible. Officials also reported the incident to the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office and said they will update the community when more information is available.
The vandalism was later publicized on Feb. 20 by Daily Voice, which noted that the exposure prompted a public condemnation of the symbols from the Village Board. Citing a village statement, the outlet also reported that there were no arrests or identified suspects at the time of publication.
Village response
"We condemn hate symbols and stand with our Jewish neighbors and all those affected by the appearance of the swastikas," the Village Board of Trustees said in a statement on the village website. The board thanked residents who quickly reported the incident and praised the Croton Police Department for its response, while urging anyone with information to contact the Detective Division at 914-271-5177. About the park
Croton Landing Park runs for more than a mile along the Hudson River at the end of Elliott Way and includes an athletic field, a restroom and a 9/11 memorial. The village parks information notes that the riverfront walkway is part of the Westchester RiverWalk and is a popular local spot for walking and recreation. Those regular community uses were a key reason officials moved quickly to remove and replace the vandalized structure. Village of Croton-on-Hudson parks page.
