On Sunday, a single-car crash on State Route 16 near 6th Avenue in Tacoma killed a 20-year-old man and injured two others. The vehicle hit a barrier, flipped onto its roof, and westbound lanes were partially blocked for about five hours while crews cleared the scene.
What State Troopers Say Happened
The Washington State Patrol told KING 5 the car struck a barrier and overturned, killing a 20-year-old passenger at the scene. Two other passengers were transported to a hospital for evaluation, and troopers say the cause of the crash remains under review. According to the patrol, the 21-year-old driver was wearing a seatbelt and was taken for treatment. Emergency crews spent several hours investigating before fully reopening the roadway.
The Stakes of Impaired Driving
Impaired driving remains one of the leading factors in deadly wrecks across Washington. The Washington Traffic Safety Commission reports that in 2024 there were 346 deaths in crashes involving impaired drivers, and state safety officials continue to urge people to plan a sober ride during high-risk hours. Ongoing outreach and enforcement campaigns aim to head off preventable tragedies on corridors like SR 16 by targeting impaired, distracted and speeding drivers.
Investigation and Possible Charges
The Washington State Patrol told KING 5 the driver faces charges of driving under the influence and vehicular homicide, and that the collision remains under review as troopers continue gathering evidence. Authorities are asking anyone with video or information about the crash to contact the Washington State Patrol. This report will be updated if prosecutors file formal charges or if new details emerge.
