As part of an effort to bolster community safety, a statewide Tornado Drill is scheduled for 10 a.m. tomorrow, Feb. 4, in coordination with Severe Weather Awareness Week. The National Weather Service will issue a practice Tornado Warning, expected to be broadcast on NOAA Alert Radio as a "routine weekly test" message, according to Hillsborough County officials. While participation in the drill is voluntary, local schools, businesses, and organizations across the Tampa Bay region are encouraged to take this opportunity to review and exercise their emergency plans.
The potential for tornadoes to emerge in Hillsborough County day or night with little warning makes this drill all the more critical. The importance of preparedness is underscored by the National Weather Service's observation that tornadoes, capable of achieving wind speeds over 200 mph, can develop in any season and at any time of day or night. A Tornado Watch will be presumed in effect on the morning of the drill, urging participants to stay alert and ready to seek shelter if a Warning is announced.
Disaster preparedness is a continuous process, with resources available to help residents understand how to protect themselves from severe weather events such as tornadoes. The county encourages the public to learn more about tornado safety by visiting Severe Weather Awareness Week 2026 webpage, which offers valuable insights and advice on the subject.
Additionally, residents can sign up for HCFL Alert, Hillsborough County's official notification system, to receive emergency messages and crucial information through email, phone, or text. Registration can be done at HCFL.gov/HCFLAlert.
