As the city of Tampa anticipates an injection of new life into its police force, twenty-four individuals are set to affirm their dedication to public service. The Tampa Police Department is ready to swear in both full-time and reserve officers in a ceremony that highlights the city's commitment towards public safety. According to the Tampa government's press release, Mayor Jane Castor and Chief Lee Bercaw are expected to conduct the formal proceedings on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at 2:00 pm in the Tampa Convention Center.
Amidst a socially reflective moment, the Tampa Police Department's recruiting class stands out for its inherent diversity and its ability to bridge local insight with seasoned expertise. Over half the recruits have emerged triumphant from the Tampa Police Recruit Scholarship Program—an effort to not only lift financial burdens but to also to strategically cultivate law enforcement from within the community. As per a statement given by the department, this initiative ensures that local talent can directly contribute to the protection of their own streets.
The incoming officers are not bound by a single experience. Alongside scholarship recipients are seven seasoned law enforcement vets and six former military members, including two Marines and four U.S. Army soldiers. This mix of perspectives is critical for a department that seeks to embody the community it serves—alternatively hardened by experience and invigorated by idealism.
People are encouraged to attend the ceremony that is open to the public, mark a moment of beginning for these officers, who have chosen to readily stand guard over the city's safety and welfare. And for those unable to be physically present, the department has ensured to not subtly disconnect them from witnessing this event, for the ceremony will be live-streamed for all on the department’s Facebook page.
