Texas families still tossing out spoiled groceries from this month’s winter blast just got a little breathing room. State officials have extended the deadline for SNAP recipients to report food that was lost or destroyed in the storm, giving households until Feb. 23, 2026, to file for replacement benefits. Once approved, replacement funds are set to hit Lone Star Cards within two business days, helping families restock fridges that went dark during the freeze.
According to the Office of the Texas Governor, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) secured federal approval to stretch the usual reporting period. Gov. Greg Abbott said the extension gives Texans more time to seek help, while HHS Executive Commissioner Stephanie Muth said the agency is “thankful” to be able to support families still digging out from the storms.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service signed off on the change on Jan. 28, allowing Texas to waive the standard 10-day reporting rule and extend the window statewide through Feb. 23, 2026. That federal green light is what lets HHSC give impacted households extra time to ask for replacements after power outages and other storm-related damage.
How to request replacement benefits
SNAP recipients can request replacement benefits in person at a local HHSC benefits office or by calling 2-1-1 for help. They can also download Form H1855 (Affidavit for Nonreceipt or Destroyed SNAP Benefits) to mail or fax, according to FOX 7 Austin. Completed forms can be mailed to Texas Health and Human Services Commission, P.O. Box 149027, Austin, TX 78714-9027, or faxed to 877-447-2839. An office locator is available at YourTexasBenefits.com.
What to expect after you apply
State officials say that once a request is approved, replacement funds should appear on Lone Star Cards within two business days, giving families a faster path to refill pantries and fridges. Texans looking for more details on disaster recovery help can visit Texas Health and Human Services or call 2-1-1 for local referrals to food and shelter resources.
