A Warren, Michigan, residence has become the center of an animal rescue and drug enforcement operation after local authorities seized multiple animals and narcotics from a home on Hobart Avenue, as per reports from The Detroit News, FOX 2 Detroit, and CBS Detroit. The Macomb County Sheriff's Enforcement Team, working with the Warren Police Department, executed a search warrant at the home of 57-year-old Michelle Reyntiens on February 12, finding crack cocaine, nine adult dogs, 11 puppies, and four turtles in conditions described as 'deplorable'.
Reyntiens has been charged with animal cruelty and possession of a controlled substance, with each count carrying the potential for a four-year prison term if convicted, which means she could face up to eight years of incarceration although animals were living unsanitary and some appearing to be in immediate need of medical attention, they were saved thanks to the coordinated effort of law enforcement and Macomb County Animal Control, the Sheriff’s Office posted on its Facebook page about the state of the animals, and the Macomb County Sheriff's Office has alleged that Reyntiens was selling narcotics in Warren, according to The Detroit News.
The deplorable state of the home and the urgent condition of the seized animals have prompted a response from authorities to ensure their well-being, with the Macomb County executive, Mark Hackel, stating the animals have been taken care of since their rescue, having been groomed and fed according to information obtained by CBS Detroit. Meanwhile, Reyntiens remains in custody at the Macomb County Jail on a $30,000 bond, pending a probable cause conference scheduled for February 26 per online court records and official statements.
It is yet unclear if Michelle Reyntiens has obtained legal representation as online court records do not presently list an attorney for her, her arraignment was in 37th District Court in Warren and her ordeal underscores the ongoing battle against not only the scourge of drug trafficking but also concerns about animal welfare and the conditions pets can sometimes face in the homes of those implicated in illegal activities, the news of the seizure was disseminated by a posting on the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page which detailed the condition of the animals and the operation's success in providing them with a safer environment.
