A tense weekend on New Orleans streets left two men stabbed in separate incidents and two women in handcuffs, according to police. One confrontation erupted early Saturday evening on Read Boulevard, and another flared up around midnight Sunday along Elysian Fields Avenue in St. Roch. In both cases, the suspects were taken into custody, and the victims received at least on-scene medical attention, authorities said.
In the first case, police say a dispute inside a car in the 5400 block of Read Boulevard around 5:30 p.m. Saturday escalated from an argument to violence. According to officers, 24-year-old Georgernae Murray argued with a man in the vehicle, then got out, took the keys, and threatened him. When he followed her while recording the encounter on his phone, she allegedly stabbed him, police said. A few hours and a few miles away, things would not be any calmer.
The second incident played out just after midnight Sunday in the 3000 block of Elysian Fields Avenue in the St. Roch neighborhood. There, 22-year-old Allana Berthelot allegedly attacked a man inside a vehicle and then pulled a knife, cutting his hand. Police say that the victim was treated at the scene. The arrests and incident details were reported by WDSU.
Citywide Policing During Mardi Gras
All of this is unfolding as New Orleans leans into one of its busiest and rowdiest times of year. City officials say the New Orleans Police Department is operating at full staffing for Mardi Gras parades and has rolled out an expanded public-safety plan that includes concrete barriers, stronger lighting, K-9 sweeps and coordinated traffic controls. Those measures are part of the city’s broader effort to keep parade routes and surrounding neighborhoods as safe as possible while the crowds roll in, according to reporting from Yahoo.
Police Response And How To Help
As of the latest public updates, NOPD has not released further details on potential charges, booking information or the conditions of the victims. The local station that first reported the arrests noted that no additional information was available at the time, per WDSU. Authorities also emphasize that an arrest is not a conviction; any formal charges would come from prosecutors and appear in court records as the cases move forward.
Anyone with information that could help investigators is asked to contact Crimestoppers GNO at 504-822-1111 or the NOPD non-emergency line at 504-821-2222, per French Quarter Citizens.
