An elderly man is fighting for his life after firefighters dragged him from a large house fire in Cincinnati’s West Price Hill early Wednesday morning. The blaze erupted before dawn and spread fast, forcing crews to abandon interior efforts and move to exterior tactics while additional units rushed in. Nearby streets were shut down as multiple companies converged on the scene to keep the flames in check.
According to FOX19 NOW, the fire broke out in the 4900 block of Western Hills Avenue just before 6:30 a.m. Assistant Fire Chief Matt Flagler told the station that firefighters found the man inside the home, pulled him out, and took him to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in critical condition. Flagler said crews initially searched the house floor by floor but had to pull back when the fire intensified, and a second alarm was called to bring in more firefighters and equipment. FOX19 NOW had a crew on scene and reported that coverage will continue as new details emerge.
Firefighters' response
Officials say the blaze grew so quickly that commanders ordered crews to switch to outside operations to protect firefighter safety. West Price Hill has seen its share of serious house fires in recent years. In May 2025, a fire in the neighborhood sent a toddler to the hospital, WCPO reported. WLWT has also documented prior West Price Hill fires that drew multiple companies and caused heavy damage, underscoring how quickly residential fires in the area can turn severe.
Investigation and next steps
The cause of Wednesday’s fire is still under investigation, and city officials had not released any additional information about the victim’s identity or updated condition. FOX19 NOW reported that a second alarm was struck and that on-scene units were working to secure the area while the Cincinnati Fire Department continued its work. Authorities are expected to release more information as the investigation moves forward. We will update this story as new details become available.
