A Westchester County missing child operation located 43 young people, ages 8 to 17, who had been reported missing or runaway. The three-day initiative, led by the state Division of Criminal Justice Services, involved more than 70 federal, state, and local agencies. Tim Williams, program manager at the division’s Missing Person’s Clearinghouse, told The Post that the coordinated effort allowed agencies to communicate directly and efficiently.

The search for missing children has increasingly incorporated technology, moving beyond traditional methods like door-to-door inquiries. New York State Police Major Daniel Smith said to CBS News that 25 years ago, investigations relied on interviews and human intelligence. Today, experts use social media, gaming platforms, and forensic techniques to help locate missing youth.

Operation command was established at Hotel MTK in Mount Kisco, serving as a coordination hub for officials from multiple agencies. The effort focused on communities with higher instances of missing-child cases, including Dobbs Ferry, Mount Pleasant, Mount Vernon, White Plains, and Yonkers. State Police Superintendent Steven James stated that while the investigations are challenging, they are essential to ensuring the safety and well-being of children.

Once located, each child was provided with services tailored to their individual needs. In one case, a pregnant teenage runaway was not only found but also given resources to support her and her newborn, according to Tim Williams in a statement to CBS News. Dr. Nina Aledort of the Office of Children and Family Services highlighted the importance of assessing whether missing children have been victimized and providing appropriate support when they have been affected by crime.

Officials emphasized the collaborative commitment to protecting youth, as highlighted by Kevin Branzetti of the National Child Protection Task Force. Speaking to CBS News, Branzetti noted that many children expressed surprise and relief upon being found, underscoring the importance and impact of the operation.
