A fast-moving, wind-whipped fire tore through a two-story house on Rhodes Drive in Athens on Monday afternoon, leaving two people hospitalized with minor burns and a family suddenly without a home.
Athens-Clarke County firefighters arrived around 2:15 p.m. to find heavy flames roaring from the back of the residence. Crews initially pushed inside for an interior attack, but shifting conditions and stiff gusts forced them to pull back and defend nearby homes as the blaze grew more aggressive.
The fire did not stay polite about property lines. Strong winds helped drive flames toward neighboring houses and even across the street, turning the quiet block into an extended firefight that dragged on for hours before crews finally got things under control, according to Atlanta News First. Firefighters juggled both offensive and defensive tactics while other emergency units worked to secure the area.
The home’s occupants were displaced, and investigators say the cause of the blaze is still under review.
