Dallas police say an early morning shooting in the 2600 block of Emmett Street left a 35-year-old man dead and a 29-year-old suspect facing a murder charge.

Officers were called to the scene at about 2:15 a.m. yesterday and found Faustino Sanchez suffering from gunshot wounds. Dallas Fire-Rescue pronounced Sanchez dead at the scene, according to police.

Investigators later identified 29-year-old Robert Neri Hernandez as the suspect. Police say Hernandez was located and arrested in connection with the shooting.

Arrest, charges and case number

According to the Dallas Police Department, Hernandez was transported to the Lew Sterrett Justice Center and is being charged with murder. Dallas police assigned case number 035912-2026 to the investigation.

Detectives are asking anyone with information to contact Detective C. Fehrenbach at (214) 671-3671 or by email at [email protected], referencing case number 035912-2026.

Where the shooting fits in the city's trends

The killing comes as Dallas continues to track a post-pandemic decline in overall violent crime, even as year-to-date homicides show a slight uptick.

The department's year-end Compstat briefing recorded 141 homicides in 2025, down from 184 in 2024, according to the Dallas Police Department. As of early March 2026, the department's daily Compstat report shows 25 homicides year-to-date, compared with 22 at the same point in 2025, per the Dallas Police Department.

Police note that those numbers are preliminary and can change if cases are reclassified.

Legal note

Hernandez faces a murder charge under Texas law. The Texas Penal Code defines murder in Chapter 19 and outlines circumstances that can elevate an offense to capital murder, which carries the harshest penalties in the state. For the statutory language, see Chapter 19 of the Texas Penal Code.

Investigation ongoing

Dallas police say the investigation remains active and will be documented under case number 035912-2026. Neighbors and anyone who was in the area around the time of the shooting are urged to review any surveillance, doorbell, or dash-cam video and to contact Detective Fehrenbach if they have information that could help the case.
