An overnight shooting in downtown Athens turned deadly early Saturday, leaving one person dead and two others critically injured, authorities said. Officers arrived shortly after 2 a.m. and found three victims near the 400 block of North Jackson.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, one victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other two were rushed to a hospital. Police told the outlet that one of those hospitalized is not expected to survive, and the other remains in critical condition. The station reported it had requested additional information from the department.
Police Say Shooter Still At Large as Investigation Unfolds
In a statement to FOX 5 Atlanta, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department said detectives were actively working the scene and that no arrests had been made. Investigators have not released any suspect details or the ages of the victims as they continue gathering evidence.
Jackson/Clayton Area Has History of Gun Violence
The shooting adds to a troubling record of violence in the Jackson and Clayton Street corridor. Downtown Athens has seen previous gunfire in the area, including a 2021 incident that injured seven people and triggered a broad search for witnesses and evidence. As reported by WUGA, investigators in earlier cases went door to door and appealed for bystander video to build their cases.
What Investigators Want From the Public
Authorities are asking anyone who was nearby or who has video from around the time of the shooting to contact police. The Athens-Clarke County Unified Government site lists police contact information and tip lines for those willing to share information.
Detectives said they plan to release additional verified details as they are able to confirm them. The investigation remains active, and officers are urging the public to come forward with anything that might help identify a suspect. Local news outlets report they will continue to update coverage as officials provide more information.
