Officer Mathew Bennett has been named the Tampa Police Department’s Officer of the Month for March 2026 after leading a proactive quality-of-life operation near 50th Street that officials say resulted in more than 30 arrests. The sweep also produced recovered firearms, the removal of illegal narcotics and multiple trespass authorizations. Department leaders framed the recognition as part of a broader push to pair targeted enforcement with outreach to nearby businesses in corridors residents have already flagged for safety concerns.
Operation Near 50th Street
In a post on X, the Tampa Police Department said Bennett led the operation "near 50th Street" and coordinated with local businesses to address ongoing concerns in the area. The department credited the sweep with more than 30 arrests, the recovery of firearms, multiple trespass authorizations and the removal of illegal narcotics, according to Tampa Police Department. The same announcement named Bennett as March’s Officer of the Month in recognition of that work. The post did not list those arrested or specify the charges involved.
50th Street Has Drawn Police Attention Before
The stretch around N. 50th Street has been the focus of police attention before. The City of Tampa detailed a roadway shooting there on Jan. 30, 2024 that left a child injured and led to an arrest, highlighting why officers sometimes concentrate enforcement in that corridor, per City of Tampa. That earlier case involved multiple felony counts and drew public attention to safety concerns in nearby neighborhoods. Department leaders have pointed to targeted operations as one tool to address recurring problems while working with community partners.
How To Reach Police
The department’s post also reminded residents that for non-emergencies they can call (813) 231-6130 and that 911 is reserved for emergencies. Bennett’s recognition was described as part of ongoing neighborhood-focused enforcement and outreach, although officials did not release a public timetable for future sweeps. Anyone with information related to the operation was urged to contact investigators using the department’s non-emergency number.
Bennett’s award puts a spotlight on officers assigned to proactive neighborhood enforcement and partnerships with local businesses. The department’s announcement was issued on March 5, 2026 and shared through the Tampa Police Department’s social channels.
