Two Albany natives are gearing up to turn the former Blue 82 at North Pearl and Columbia into a new neighborhood spot called Norma’s, breathing fresh life into one of downtown’s most visible corners. The plan is a low-key, community-first bar where people can post up with laptops during the day, grab pressed sandwiches and bar snacks, and slide into a small lineup of draft beers before or after shows. The partners are eyeing a late-summer 2026 debut, with hours expected to run roughly noon to midnight.

As reported by Times Union, the project is led by Albany High grads Paul Hamill and Brandon Lenihan, who now operate Brooklyn bars including Lowlands, The Adirondack and The Barlow. Hamill told the paper they are aiming for an August or early September 2026 opening, depending on how construction and permits shake out, and expect to start with a staff of about eight to 12 people. He also said Norma’s will feature six to eight tap lines and a compact prep-style kitchen instead of a full-service setup.

Small Kitchen, Big Neighborhood Focus

Norma’s menu is designed for speed and sharing rather than sit-down, multicourse meals: panini, sandwiches, snacks and desserts brought in from local bakeries. With no stove, oven or fryer in the mix and a modest number of taps, the bar is clearly tilting drinks-forward and aiming to keep things moving. To keep the room lively, the partners are planning occasional events like trivia, vinyl nights or tap takeovers to pull in nearby residents and theater crowds.

Developer Backing And North Pearl Momentum

The building at 82 N. Pearl is owned by Redburn Development Partners, which has been rehabbing properties along the North Pearl corridor to stack ground-floor retail under new upstairs apartments, according to Downtown Albany. Redburn’s leadership has been courting seasoned hospitality operators for the block, and Downtown Albany executive director Georgette Steffens has called the return of restaurants and bars “a big win” for downtown. Norma’s will join a run of recent openings and conversions that have filled in storefronts that once sat empty along North Pearl.

Looking Ahead

Blue 82, the longtime tenant at 82 North Pearl, shut its doors in 2022 after almost 17 years in business, leaving a prime corner open for a new concept, per Times Union. The address remains on downtown restaurant directories and maps, including the city’s guide and North Pearl listings. Hamill says hiring will ramp up as construction wraps, and the team plans to push ahead with an August or September 2026 opening as long as permitting stays on track.
