It was not the sunrise wake-up call Arcadia residents were expecting. Early Tuesday morning, more than 7,600 customers in and around Phoenix’s Arcadia neighborhood suddenly lost electricity after a series of outages hit just after 4 a.m., cutting power to homes, some businesses and several key intersections across the east side.
Salt River Project crews moved in quickly, fanning out through the neighborhood to isolate the problem while investigators worked to pin down what went wrong. The utility said the cause of the outage was still under investigation.
As reported by KTAR News, SRP said it was working to restore service to more than 7,600 customers and expected power would be fully back on by about 8 a.m., according to an update it posted around 6:15 a.m.
Outage Clusters and the Online Map
SRP’s outage tools showed the blackout was not just one big failure but a patchwork of separate service events across east Phoenix. Eight distinct clusters were listed, with individual incidents affecting roughly 370 to 2,200 customers each.
Those clusters were concentrated in an area roughly bounded by 40th Street to the west, 68th Street to the east, Camelback Road to the north and the Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) to the south, according to the SRP outage map.
Local Reaction and Immediate Impacts
With traffic signals out and streetlights dark, neighbors turned to their phones to figure out what was going on. Residents posted photos and updates to local forums flagging intersections without working traffic signals and pockets of unlit streets during the pre-dawn outage.
A busy r/Phoenix thread quickly filled with firsthand accounts and pictures showing the scope of the blackout. Some users reported their power snapping back on within about an hour, while others said their blocks stayed dark longer in scattered pockets around the neighborhood.
How to Check Outages and Stay Safe
SRP encourages customers to report outages and sign up for automated alerts through its outage center, and it offers detailed safety guidance for downed power lines and storm-related hazards on its outage and storm-safety pages. For people who rely on electricity for medical equipment, SRP’s resources include information about enrolling in its Medical Preparedness Program and additional safety tips, available through SRP.
This story will be updated if SRP or local outlets release more information about what caused the outage or provide additional details on repairs.
