A quiet stretch of Brookmeadow Drive in Belleville turned into a crime scene Friday when a juvenile male was found shot inside a garage in the 2700 block, according to police. Officers and EMS rushed in to provide medical aid, but the teen later died from his injuries.
In a Facebook update, the Belleville Police Department said officers responded Friday after a report of a subject shot and located a juvenile male in the garage suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers and Abbott EMS worked to provide life-saving measures, and the St. Clair County Coroner’s Office also responded to the scene. Police said the incident “does not appear to be intentional” and added they are not seeking any suspects at this time. The department said it is withholding further details to protect the juvenile victim and witnesses.
Why police are limiting details
Illinois law puts tight limits on what authorities can release about minors. Under the Juvenile Court Act (705 ILCS 405), as outlined by Justia, records concerning juveniles must be kept separate and are generally closed to public inspection. That legal framework helps explain why investigators are not releasing the teen’s name or identifying information about witnesses.
Investigation underway
Police said detectives from the department's investigations division and its crime-scene unit stayed on scene to process evidence and interview witnesses, and that the St. Clair County Coroner's Office also responded, according to the department’s post on Facebook. Officials reiterated that they are not currently seeking any suspects and that the investigation is ongoing.

Local context
The fatal shooting comes on the heels of other gun incidents in Belleville this month. Earlier in February, police said a juvenile was hospitalized after a separate shooting and another juvenile was taken into custody in that case, an episode reported by local affiliate First Alert 4. Detectives said they plan to release more information in the current case as appropriate while the probe continues.
