After nearly three decades of feeding neighbors near Houston's Museum District, the Raven Grill is calling it a night. The longtime Bissonnet staple will close for good after dinner service on March 29, ending a 28-year run that turned the cozy spot into a go-to for wood-grilled comfort and casual hangouts.

Owners Sara and Rob Cromie said in a social media post that the restaurant's lease was not renewed, bringing the run to an abrupt stop. The closure leaves their next-door deli and coffee shop, Picnic, as the couple's lone operation on the block.

As reported by the Houston Chronicle, the Cromies wrote, "We greatly appreciate your patronage, support and friendship over the past 28 years," and invited customers to swing by before the March 29 finale. According to the Chronicle, the owners cited the nonrenewed lease as the reason for the decision, and fans quickly flooded the restaurant's Instagram and Facebook pages with emotional messages and memories.

The Raven Grill opened in March 1998 and built a reputation for regional plates cooked over a wood-fired grill, according to The Raven Grill's website. Over time, Sara and Rob Cromie expanded with Picnic next door and other local projects, and the Raven grew into a neighborhood anchor for generations of diners.

Picnic next door will stay open

While the Raven counts down to its final service, Picnic is staying put. The deli and coffee shop at 1928 Bissonnet is listed as open Monday through Saturday and will remain part of the property plans as Raven winds down, according to Picnic Box Lunches. Picnic continues to take orders and lists its hours and contact details on its site while the restaurant next door moves through its last weeks.

What this says about local restaurants

The Cromies are no strangers to tough calls in a difficult restaurant climate. Their Montrose bar La Grange shut its doors in January 2024 amid rising costs and labor challenges, as reported by the Houston Chronicle. That earlier closure highlighted the tight margins that can push long-running, independent spots to close or scale back, even when they are well loved.

Regulars and longtime staff are already trading stories and tributes online, and the Cromies have encouraged customers to stop in, share a meal, and say goodbye to the crew before service ends on March 29. For now, Picnic will continue as a neighborhood fixture while what comes next for the Raven space remains undecided.
