A 20-year-old man is facing an aggravated robbery charge after what authorities describe as a brutal January road rage carjacking in Far East El Paso that left a driver beaten and his vehicle stolen. Deputies identified the suspect as Cristian Garay and said he was taken into custody Friday in the 3500 block of Gajeske Avenue near Red Sands, wrapping up a months-long investigation into a Jan. 11 confrontation at the intersection of Greg and Desert Meadows Road.
Arrest and charges
According to KFOX, investigators arrested Garay on Friday and charged him with aggravated robbery after identifying him as a suspect in the Jan. 11 road rage incident. Deputies say Garay and other suspects are accused of assaulting a man, leaving him covered in blood, then stealing his vehicle and taking off. Local officials have not publicly named any additional suspects.
Context: a pattern of violent traffic crimes
Road rage episodes that escalate into carjackings or assaults have surfaced across the Borderland in recent months, and local law enforcement has made a series of arrests as those cases move forward. Hoodline previously reported a separate incident that began as a traffic dispute and ended in a vehicle theft and threats, underscoring how fast a routine confrontation on the road can turn ugly in the region. The roadside gun threats case is one recent example of cross-jurisdictional work to track down suspects.
Legal status and tips
Garay was booked into the El Paso County Downtown Jail and, per KFOX, spent the weekend there before posting a $45,000 surety bond and being released Monday. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation and has not released details about the victim’s injuries. Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers of El Paso, which maintains an online tip form and phone line.
