A Bogalusa man who admitted in court to sexually abusing a child will spend the next four decades in state prison. On Monday, 38-year-old Christopher Rachel Sr. was sentenced to 40 years at hard labor after pleading guilty to one count of second-degree rape, two counts of sexual battery involving a victim under 13 and three counts of molestation of a juvenile. Judge William H. Burris ordered the time to be served without the benefit of parole, probation or suspension of sentence and imposed lifetime protections for the survivor.
Plea and Sentence
According to WDSU, Rachel entered his guilty plea in 22nd Judicial District Court and will be required to register as a sex offender. The station reports that the plea includes a lifetime "stay away" order that bars him from having any contact with the victim. Prosecutors said Rachel admitted to having sexual relations with the juvenile when questioned by investigators.
Indictment and Investigation Timeline
In a November 2024 press release, District Attorney Collin Sims' office said a Washington Parish grand jury indicted Rachel on Nov. 20, 2024, on charges that included first-degree rape of a child under 13, sexual battery of a child under 13 and molestation of a juvenile. The release states the offenses were alleged to have occurred between 2018 and 2024 and that the Special Victims Unit presented the case to the grand jury.
Victim Statements and Evidence
Bogalusa police were first alerted on Aug. 4, 2024, when officers responded to a domestic disturbance and investigators were notified of the alleged abuse. A search of Rachel's residence turned up items that corroborated the victim's account, and case statements indicate the abuse began when the child was about 10 and was frequent. "This sentence ensures that a predator is removed from our community for a very long time," District Attorney Collin Sims said, according to WDSU.
Local Enforcement and Context
The case is the latest example of the 22nd JDC Special Victims Unit's recent work to confront child predators, including a multi-agency operation in Washington Parish earlier this month that led to three arrests, per District Attorney Collin Sims' office. That news archive lists multiple prosecutions and sentences in recent weeks, underscoring increased interagency coordination on SVU cases.
