San Antonio’s annual book festival is coming back in a big way on April 11, 2026, bringing literary star power and a full day of free programming to downtown. George Saunders and Julia Alvarez headline this year’s slate, with events once again spread across the Central Library and UTSA’s Southwest Campus.
The lineup dropped in a March 3 press release, with organizers promising more than 110 authors and an expected crowd topping 22,000 readers. A detailed schedule will land in mid-March, according to the San Antonio Book Festival. “As we celebrate our 14th year, we’re thrilled to welcome the entire community to this free event in the heart of downtown,” festival executive director Lisa Ayres said in the announcement.
Big Names, Poetry, And A Ticketed Kickoff
George Saunders is set to talk about his new novel, Vigil, and literary director Anna Dobben notes he is the festival’s first Booker Prize winner to appear. Julia Alvarez will discuss her new poetry collection, Visitations, in conversation with Sandra Cisneros, San Antonio Express-News reports.
The weekend warmup starts two days earlier with a ticketed kickoff at 6:30 p.m. on April 9 at Central Christian Church, where “Today” show host Jenna Bush Hager will interview debut author Juliet Faithfull. Tickets run $42.56 and include a signed copy of the book, according to the San Antonio Express-News.
Cookbooks, Kids’ Programming And A Local Bookseller In The Spotlight
This year’s program folds in cookbook conversations, including sessions with San Antonio’s Curry Boys and pitmaster Arnie Segovia, alongside a full slate for children and teens, San Antonio Book Festival notes. Nowhere Bookshop returns as the official bookseller, setting up shop to keep festivalgoers stocked with fresh reads.
Families can expect roaming costumed characters, performances from Magik Theatre and hands-on activities built to keep younger readers busy and curious throughout the day, according to the festival announcement.
What Locals Need To Know
Organizers pitch the festival as a cross-generational outing that blends national literary names with San Antonio voices. Local coverage has highlighted its downtown footprint and family focus in previous years, helping cement it as a spring tradition for residents, according to San Antonio Report.
Expect author panels and conversations throughout the Central Library and UTSA Southwest Campus, a book-sales tent operated by Nowhere Bookshop, a lineup of food trucks and a marketplace featuring local vendors.
The main festival runs 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 11 with free admission. The April 9 kickoff event requires a ticket and includes a copy of the featured book, as noted by the San Antonio Express-News. For the final schedule and complete author list, keep an eye on the festival’s website and social channels as the lineup is finalized.
